Nearly everyone agrees that health care costs are unsustainable. Despite a heavy investment in health care, the U.S. compares poorly to other high-income countries on such key health measures as life expectancy and the prevalence of chronic conditions. These issues are exacerbated in West Virginia, a state with very poor health indices and very high health care spending. Transforming the health system in West Virginia will require overcoming resistance to change and solutions that benefit patients, providers and payers (win-win-win). In his presentation, Dr. Coben will provide examples of these solutions and of illustrative opportunities for transformation.
